One thing seems true in Louisiana: we have no shortage of challenges. We live with an unceasing fear of Mother Nature, and in recent years, that fear has been with good reason, as our state has been slammed by one major hurricane after another. Our politics are dividing us further and further. And the global economy is changing in a way that is impacting nearly every job in Louisiana’s most important industries.
Some of the challenges we encounter are beyond our control. But so many others are, in fact, moments of great opportunity. What is needed to realize those opportunities is thoughtful and engaged leadership.
I am one of those leaders. My name is Woodrow Parker.
I was born to Woodrow and Shirley Parker in the winter of 1965, and I was raised in the small, fishing and petroleum community of Morgan City, Louisiana. There, my parents taught me to never forget where I came from and the importance of always giving back to the community. It is from them that I developed a great love for this state.
After high school, I had left the bayous of South Louisiana, to cultivate my passion for photography and to secure opportunities to make it my career. Soon enough, though, I found myself in public service, using each opportunity as the experience needed to carry me to the next. Among other things, I have served on the boards of Congressional advisory committees and civic groups from Dayton, Ohio, and Sacramento, California.
Today, I am back home, in the region where I grew up. Now a father of three, the success of my children is my priority, but my role in public life is no less important. In fact, I serve my community as a member of the Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee, working alongside other leaders in this region to ensure a good quality of life for everyone. Additionally, I am the founder and director of the Aqua Safety First Community Program, designed to bring water-safety and wellness trainings to the underserved in our region.
It has been my belief that our communities need serious and dedicated leadership to flourish. It is my goal to be just that type of leader, daily - to leading, to educating, and to engaging the people of Louisiana, so that many lives to be made better.
You see, I know that our economy matters, our jobs matter, the education of our children matters, protecting our vulnerable communities matters, and sustaining our way of life matters. But it will take decisive leadership to help them going forward.
As a leader in the Louisiana Democratic Party, I acknowledge where we have had shortcomings, and I have seen how those shortcomings impact people’s lives, first-hand. And so, as a solutions-oriented leader, I aspire to work within the party to implement strategies that create viable public policy, activate voters, and implement real and lasting change. I support these as just some of the areas of improvement I would help to institute within the Party:
· Standardized development of the DPEC across the state
· Better education of party leadership
· Regular voter-registration events
· Greater youth-engagement opportunities
· More public events (i.e., townhalls, etc.)
· Development of an Active Voter Database
This is all a part of the effort to improve the performance of our Party through leadership, education, and engagement. And this is a winning approach.
And so, I ask you to stand with me – Woodrow Parker. Together, we can improve the Louisiana Democratic Party, and make it a more relevant force in the leadership of our state. And together, we can make a positive impact across our state through that leadership.
